Mission behind ElephantSkin
With the aim of replacing the disposable plastic glove worldwide, we have launched ElephantSkin gloves. These are virus and bacteria barrier gloves made from reusable & washable materials.
The company is committed to using the most sustainable raw materials possible to provide livable and practical products for the environmentally conscious customer. Natural materials are preferable to plastics, recycled materials are preferable to newly produced ones. Materials with the lowest possible CO2 footprint in production should be used. Transport routes are to be kept to a minimum, and means of transport are to be selected to be as energy-efficient as possible.
Our suppliers must demonstrate their compliance with local environmental & social standards. For compliance with social standards in countries outside the European Union we use BSCI amfori.
Piles of plastic waste
The ElephantSkin team sets high goals every year. In the first full business year - 2021 - we saved 2600t of plastic together with our customers! This is equivalent to the weight of 433 adult elephants - that's more elephants than currently exist in the Ivory Coast.
That was just the beginning: our mission goes much further:
It is estimated that 65 billion plastic gloves are currently used worldwide per month. That's a total of 2.2 billion gloves per day!*
According to our calculations, that's 128,832 m3 of plastic waste. To give you a better idea: That's 1571 truckloads of plastic waste per day. ** That's a staggering amount!

**Based on our source above we calculated: 4.4 billion pairs of gloves equals 88 million packages of disposable gloves (size of 5.5 x 12.2 x 24 cm, containing 50 pairs) are consumed in a day and calculated the volume of one packages. Volume of a truckload totals up to 82 cubic meters.
